Teenagers have a lot going on in their lives. They have to deal with school, parents, and friends, not to mention their very own issues about themselves. Blame media. Blame the parents. Blame whoever or whatever you want, but, physical appearances are and will be very important to a teen. Any amount of weight gain, no matter how small, will be a cause for panic. "I'm fat!" is tantamount to "I'm ugly!" and ugly is not what a teen wants to be. That's why weight loss can be a very scary area for both a parent and a teen.
Which side are you on?
From the point of view of a parent, it should be about healthy teen weight loss. Your child may have all those issues and is using weight loss as a way out, but it has to healthy teen weight loss, and no other way. From the point of view of a teen, however, they have to lose as much weight as possible in the shortest amount of time.
In the world that teenagers and parents are in, there's somewhat an unwritten rule to agree to disagree. Both parties believe that the other doesn't understand them. Both parties won't budge for the other. However, for healthy teen weight loss to be achieved, both parties have to work together. Parents have to try to understand why their teens are doing what they do, and teens have to try to understand why parents want it in such a way.
One such compromise that teenagers and parents can have with regards to healthy teen weight loss is to enroll in a summer weight loss camp. It provides parents with the safe and healthy environment they are looking for (all programs and activities are supervised) and it gives teens a way of doing the things they want. A month may not exactly be the shortest time they have in mind, but because the weight loss camp offers so much for them, not to mention the level of interaction that they get with kids of the same age and with the same concerns, they won't be minding that they had to stay there for a month. And besides, what's important is that they lose weight at the end of it all.
